If you live in the Orlando area like I do, or really any urban/ populated environment, usually you're subjected to a LOT of horrible horrible billboards as you drive down the road. Most of them cluttered with paragraphs of text, blurry images, or unclear messages. On top of that, a lot of them just aren't very clever or eye catching.
So it certainly speaks to me when I see a billboard that's not only clever, but clean and clear in its message. So without any further delay, I present to you two absolutely outstandingly great billboards:
#1 McDonald's
It's no secret to the rest of the world that 'Miccy D's is quite a sizable company with a large advertising budget to kick around (In 2001 they spent over 1 billion dollars on advertising). So while it might not come as a surprise when they come out with a good ad, it's certainly a surprise to me when they come out with a great billboard ad. BEHOLD!:

Yes that is a sun dial. With the companies logo as the arrow. That points to what menu items are available during that time of the day.
Simple, sleek, ingenuitive, and eye catching. This baby has it all! The level of creativity here is honestly a little flabbergasting especially when taken into account what I can usually expect from billboard ads. Sure it's a different, more clever take on the old clock style billboards and you can only post them in certain spots so the effect actually works, but it does its job and it does it well. Great billboard? Heck ya it is.
#2 Ron Jon
For the uninitiated Ron Jon is a surf shop. While they where never really popular (at least that I noticed) back when I was a kid living up in Virginia Beach, their presence is quite... apparent here in Florida. I actually had the pleasure to see this style of billboard in a few different 'flavors' in person while I was on a road trip last month:

Yes, that's two different full sized billboard ads on opposite sides of the road. While a lot of people could argue that it's bad design and brand management (what with splitting your logo in half and all) it makes for a very interesting and attention grabbing outdoor display using a method I have never seen before. Certainly not the best I've ever seen, but quite clever.
While the location of the store on this particular billboard is poorly placed and implemented, the style and message the company is conveying is loud and clear and it makes you want to look at the ad and because the jagged 'break' is clean down the center, you're not loosing any information (that information is reminding you that Ron Jon Surf Shop exists).
As I said earlier, this series of ads comes in quite a few different flavors and when you've seen nothing but the same 4 terrible billboard ads over and over again these really stand out. Now only if radio ads could step up to the challenge...
